For most devices, the Ports device setup class and the Serial function driver provide the functionality required to operate serial ports and COM ports. Because from what i am reading, changing the com port number in the ini file, will allow you to control what com port gets assigned to the Topaz device in Windows. Are you using the topaz HSB to Com driver? If so this document might be helpful. Steps 4 and 5 explain how to modify the SigPlus.ini file to set the com port that you need it to use. Uninstall and reinstall the driver. The device driver may have become corrupted. Uninstall the driver from Device Manager and scan for new hardware to install the driver again. In the device's Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall. Follow the instructions. Restart your computer. Go to Control panel, enter System to access your Device Manager Scroll down to the LPT/ COM port then double click Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port Click Driver in the Windows Properties section The driver must be numbered as '2.0.2.8' and dates accordingly.
Provide an INF file that specifies the Ports device setup class and the Serial function driver as the service for the port.
To configure a serial port as COM port, comply with the requirements that are defined in Configuration of COM Ports.
